2022 Elective Classes for Intensive English (2023 Elective courses are not yet determined)

Title Description
Video Production Workshop Practice everyday conversation and persuasion as you work in teams to develop, film, edit, and share memorable videos. No previous experience is required.
Classic American Films

You will be more comfortable and confident in casual conversation with your American peers when you are familiar with the frequent reference to popular films. We will focus on American films from the past 30 years that all Americans are familiar with and reference often in conversation and on television.

American Idioms and Pronunciation This course will help you learn how to sound “more American.”  We will enjoy studying and applying advanced techniques of American pronunciation, using basic concepts involving: individual sound production, rhythm, intonation, and phrasing while discussing a variety of topics. This course is also designed to help non-native English speakers to understand the basic meaning of idioms and use them in appropriate situations.
The Magic of the Short Story Read, analyze and explore these small masterpieces which create and destroy a world within just a few pages. From classical Saki to now popular Rachel Khong, we'll read these stories aloud in class and discuss them in real time. After a few classroom discussions led by the teacher, you will be asked to present a story with your group.
Memoir Blogging Half of each class will be spent seeking campus adventures, and the second hour will be spent posting photos to your blog of what you found, and writing about those finds. Learning about Yale architecture, visiting a botanical park, the campus observatory, night dances...your blog will be an inspiration for you to learn more about Yale's culture, as well as a souvenir to take home from your experiences here.
Performance Speaking If you want to challenge yourself to speak English with great confidence, then this is the course for you. This elective will focus on building your skills to project your speech out into the world or audience. We will practice the rhythm and tone of the language and improve natural fluency and clear articulation using drama, role plays, music and rap. You will recite short dialogues and monologues from shows like Friends and Greys Anatomy, and you will learn some of the famous hip-hop numbers from the Broadway play, “Hamilton”.  We will ultimately perform for the program at the end of the summer semester. Are you ready to stand up and shout clearly?
