“Being a Yale student, I am in New Haven the whole year, so some people are surprised I want to spend even more time there. But New Haven in the summer is absolutely beautiful. Not only is it warm and green, but it is just full of joy. The New Haven community comes alive with concerts on the Green, Salsa parties on Ninth Square, July 4th firework shows on East Rock, and tons of beach excursions.”

Student Bio

Aaron Weiser, a senior English major at Yale from Texas, speaks about his experiences with YSS:

“Over my three summers at YSS, my favorite summer English course I have taken was called “Milton”, taught by Yale English professor John Rogers, one of the world’s leading Milton scholars. Over the five-week course, we dedicated ourselves to the complexities, beauties, and frustrations of Milton’s classic Paradise Lost. I was often both inspired and challenged to push my ideas past the obvious, and the support and feedback I received on our two major essays bettered me as a writer and, more importantly, as a reader of not just Renaissance poetry, but literature in general. My final essay on the strange sympathetic qualities of the epic poem’s character Sin is still one of my favorites today.”

“There are honestly too many fun things from my time at YSS to list them all. I’ve gotten to go to Broadway for the first time and see Wicked with a bunch of my friends. I’ve gone bowling, had movie nights, and played frisbee in the pouring rain. And although sometimes it feels like there’s nothing better than just staying up really late in the buttery, eating chicken nuggets, and talking to new and old friends, I think my absolute favorite thing that YSS does is go to Yale’s Outdoor Education Center. We get on a bus and drive about an hour up to Lyme, Connecticut. We pack tons of games, sunscreen, and food for grilling. There is a huge lake with a swimming area with a cute dock to rest on. There are paddle boards, kayaks, rowboats, and canoes. There are campfires and volleyball nets. It’s absolutely a blast. We have music playing and people take pictures. It feels like the quintessential summer camp activity. It’s something I look forward to every summer.”
