We’re thrilled that you’ll be starting your Yale journey this summer with Yale Summer Session. Whether this is your first year of college, or you're transferring from another school, this is a wonderful opportunity to dive into academic life at Yale, and we can’t wait to have you join us.

Application Requirements

The following materials are required for newly-admitted Yale College student (incoming first-year and transfer) applications:

  • Online Application with $80 nonrefundable application fee
  • Scan of your valid health insurance card
  • Copy of your admission letter to Yale College

If you are applying to attend in-person courses or live on campus, additional requirements include submitting immunization records for students studying in-person and living on or off campus. This requirement will need to be fulfilled after admission but before arrival to Yale.

Academic Information for Newly-Admitted Yale College Students

In the online application, you’ll select the courses you wish to take. Before making your selection, we recommend reviewing the course descriptions to ensure you choose the best fit for your academic goals. Due to the condensed nature of the summer courses, there is no Add/Drop period, and the window for changing courses is very short. 

Once you are admitted to a course or program, you are officially enrolled in Yale Summer Session and will receive a grade unless you drop the course or withdraw. If you decide not to attend after admission, you must withdraw by completing an online withdrawal form.  

[point] Incoming Yale College students may not take in-person courses in Session A. 

Full-time study is defined as two courses (totaling 2 credits) per session, which is also the maximum enrollment allowed. For more information, please refer to the Yale Summer Session Student Handbook for the relevant academic regulations.

Yale Summer Session Financial Assistance

YSS financial assistance provides 50% off of tuition (not other expenses, such as room and board) for up to a maximum of two courses (not course credits) each summer to newly admitted Yale College students who will receive financial aid during the regular academic year.  You will need to upload your Fall Financial Aid Offer into your online application. Please refer to Financial Assistance for more information.

For In-person Study: Insurance and Vaccinations

If you have elected to join the Yale Health Center insurance plan, that coverage won't begin until the start of the Fall semester, so you will be on your private/family insurance plan for the duration of Yale Summer Session. You will need to upload a copy of your current health insurance card into your online application.

Yale University requires all students to submit immunization and health forms before arriving on campus. You will not be allowed to enroll in in-person courses until all required forms are submitted and immunization requirements are met. Please note that some immunizations may take a month or more to complete, so it’s important to start the process early.  

[point] The immunization deadlines for Yale Summer Session are earlier than the deadlines for Yale College.

Your Yale Student ID Card

Your Yale ID card provides access to libraries, buildings, residential colleges, dining halls, and more. Once your NetID is activated, upload your photo for the ID card through the Yale ID Center website. Failing to upload your photo by the deadline may delay your ID card and restrict access to campus buildings at the start of your session.

Remember to pick up your Yale student ID at registration check-in. If you miss this opportunity, you will need to visit the YSS office to collect it—please *do not* go to the ID Center for a replacement.  

Residential Information for Incoming Yale College Students

Select Yale Residential Colleges (dormitories) are open during the summer, though you may be assigned to a different college than the one you will be living in for the fall semester. Yale undergraduates serve as residential counselors, offering support and assistance throughout your stay. For more information about living on campus, be sure to check out the Experience section of our website.
