YSS Application Process

All students, including Yale College students, must apply for admission to YSS. YSS is not an open-enrollment program. Students are carefully screened for academic credentials and are deemed eligible for a specific course of study.

Yale College students comprise much of our summer student body, with visiting college and pre-college students filling in the rest. Pre-college students must have completed their junior year of high school or its equivalent. Most admitted pre-college students are doing AP or IB and honors work, and all represent the best of their group. They are anxious to experience college life and academics, and they are curious and eager to be challenged. Visiting college students may be from the local area or well beyond. You will find that your students form a diverse body of focused learners; most will only be taking one other course alongside yours. If you are teaching in Session B, there is a greater likelihood that some of your students will be pre-college students. It is important that they be treated academically as college students since they come with the full expectation of being challenged at that level.

Communication

We request that faculty members not communicate with individual students (of whatever age) by text message, phone, or social media. Please use your zoom rooms or email only.

Academic Advising

Much of the advising and support network available to students during the academic year is not available during the summer. Among the missing pieces are the student’s college dean and advisor, as well as other key departmental representatives, such as the DUS. Visiting students may not miss these, but they may also desire some sort of academic advising during their time here. The Dean of International and Summer Programs for Yale College and members of the Yale Summer Session staff act as the primary academic advisors during the summer. If students in your course have questions, please direct them to the Yale Summer Session Office.

Tutoring

Tutoring is available to students during summer through our partnership with both the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning and the Center for Language Study. There is no charge to students for tutoring, and we encourage you to connect your students with support as early as possible. The tutoring options are listed on our website: https://summer.yale.edu/academics/summer-session-tutoring.

  • STEM tutoring: There will be drop-in hours for the different departments throughout the week as indicated on the website (listed above).
  • Writing tutoring: Students are encouraged to make an appointment for writing support in advance; however, they can also drop-in for help on a first-come, first-served basis. Please feel free to include the following note on your syllabus if you anticipate that your students would benefit from writing tutoring: Staffed by Yale undergrads and graduate students, the Yale College Writing Center offers free, one-on-one writing help to all students enrolled in Yale Summer Session. To reserve an appointment or drop-in during a Zoom shift, visit: https://yaleuniversity.mywconline.com/.
  • Language tutoring: If a student reaches out to you to request additional tutoring or if there is a student in your course that you feel would benefit from additional tutoring, please reach out to David Ortega (david.ortega@yale.edu) in CLS with the name of the student and your course (e.g., French S130) indicating that you approve the student for tutoring. After you have written to David, please advise the student to request tutoring on the CLS's online form.

SHARE and Title IX resources are available to Yale College and visiting students during the summer.

If you have a concern about a specific student’s health or safety, please contact the Dean of International and Summer Programs for Yale College: Alexander Rosas at alexander.rosas@yale.edu.
