Jasmine found her class, “Writing about Family,” to be one of the most meaningful courses in her educational journey. “We were allowed to be vulnerable with people who were, initially, complete strangers; however, through the course of the classes, I found that despite coming from opposite corners of the world, we still had many similarities.”

Student Bio

Jasmine is a 20-year-old student from Indonesia who spent her summer with YSS in Sessions A and B. She took classes in film, philosophy, and American history.

Jasmine’s classes were at 9am and 1pm, leaving her with lots of time to do homework, hang out with friends, and explore Yale and New Haven. She frequented Payne Whitney Gym when she wasn’t in class.

At first, Jasmine was slightly taken aback by the new learning environment, but she came to love it. “I wasn’t used to reading as much, so that was one of the most challenging aspects of YSS courses. Once I started to feel comfortable with the pace, discussions became so engaging and I genuinely enjoyed speaking up in class. Some classes also gave opportunities to discuss our works, and it was incredibly insightful to receive constructive criticism directly from readers."

She highly recommends taking courses outside of your comfort zone! “I took courses that are very different from what I’m used to back at my home university and I found them to be a special opportunity to explore the subjects out of passion. The lecturers were all so supportive; they encouraged us to be open-minded and enjoy the process and it helped me gain confidence in my work.”

Jasmine is currently working on her Junior Composition Recital, and her collegiate a cappella group, Voxcom UPH, will compete in the Singapore national championship.
