If you are a newly admitted Yale College student, Yale Summer Session is an opportunity to begin your academic experience early. Take Yale College courses for credit, explore your interests, and get a head start on your Yale degree—all while getting to know the campus and community before the fall.

Before applying, keep the following in mind:

  • Choose your courses thoughtfully. Select your desired courses in the online application and review course descriptions in advance to make sure they’re a good fit.
  • Course changes are limited. Yale Summer Session does not have an Add/Drop period, and the window for changing courses is very limited.
  • Admission means enrollment. Admission to a course constitutes enrollment. If you decide not to attend, you must withdraw by submitting the Change Form by the applicable deadline. Students who do not withdraw by the applicable deadline will receive a grade.
  • Maximum enrollment: Full-time study is two courses, totaling two credits, per session. This is also the maximum enrollment allowed.
  • Session A restriction: Incoming Yale College students may not take in-person courses during Session A.

For more information, please refer to the Yale Summer Session Student Handbook for the relevant academic regulations.

Application Requirements

The following materials are required for newly-admitted Yale College student (incoming first-year and transfer) applications:

  • An online Yale Summer Session application
  • A non-refundable $80 application fee
  • A copy of your valid health insurance card

[cal] Please refer to the Dates and Deadlines page for all relevant deadlines. All supporting documentation must be received on or before the application deadline.

For In-Person Study: Insurance and Vaccinations

Required Health Insurance

If you have elected to enroll in the Yale Health Plan, your coverage will not begin until the start of the fall semester. You will therefore use your private or family health insurance coverage during Yale Summer Session.

You must upload a copy of your current health insurance card with your Yale Summer Session application.

Immunizations and Health Forms

Yale University requires all students studying in person to submit required immunization and health forms before arriving on campus. You will not be allowed to attend in-person courses until all required forms are submitted and immunization requirements are met.

Some immunizations may take a month or more to complete, so start the process as early as possible to ensure you meet the requirements before the start of Summer Session.

[point] The immunization deadlines for Yale Summer Session are earlier than the deadlines for Yale College.

Yale Summer Session Financial Assistance

Yale Summer Session offers limited financial assistance to Yale College students to newly admitted Yale College students who will financial aid during the regular academic year. Please refer to Financial Assistance for more information.

Residential Information for Incoming Yale College Students

Select Yale Residential Colleges (dormitories) are open during the summer, though you may be assigned to a different college than the one you will be living in for the fall semester. Yale undergraduates serve as residential counselors, offering support and assistance. For more details about living on campus, be sure to visit our Living on Campus page.

"
Being a Yale student, I am in New Haven the whole year, so some people are surprised I want to spend even more time there. But New Haven in the summer is absolutely beautiful. Not only is it warm and green, but it is just full of joy. The New Haven community comes alive with concerts on the Green, Salsa parties on Ninth Square, July 4th firework shows on East Rock, and tons of beach excursions.

Meeting new people and making memories with these new friends was very fun, especially with all the new places in New Haven that I got to explore with them!
