Health, Safety, and Well-Being at Yale
[Note] The information on this page is for Summer 2025 and is provided for informational purposes. Updated information for Summer 2026 will be provided soon.
Please review the resources on this page and share them with your family. We’re here to support you, but it’s also important to take care of your own health and safety while at Yale.
Health
[point] All students attending in-person courses or living on campus must be enrolled in health insurance.
Students must have health insurance coverage while enrolled in person (taking in-person courses or living on campus) in Yale Summer Session; they are solely responsible for determining that their insurance covers all Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant Essential Health Benefits in the New Haven and Yale University campus area. Insurance plans that do not meet these standards or do not offer full in-network coverage in the area may leave students underinsured and personally exposed to significant out-of-pocket expenses if ill or injured during the program.
Students should always carry their health insurance card.
Yale Summer Session students who are living in the Yale Summer Session Summer Colleges may receive limited services for the evaluation and treatment of urgent, non-emergency medical issues from Acute Care at the Yale Health Center at 55 Lock Street. Further information for 2026 will be available in December.
| Student Type | Insurance Coverage |
|---|---|
| Currently-Enrolled Yale College Students | For continuing Yale College students, Yale Health student coverage generally carries over to the summer, covering the full academic year, from August to July. For more information, or to confirm your individual coverage, contact Yale Health Member Services. Yale College students who are or will be on, or are returning from, a leave of absence, a withdrawal, or a year or term abroad, or who recently graduated, should consult with Yale Health Member Services if they have any questions about their coverage. Students who waived their Yale Health Hospitalization and Specialty Care Coverage must hold an alternate insurance plan that meets the coverage standards above. |
| Incoming Yale College Students | Incoming Yale College students must have an insurance plan that meets the coverage standards above. |
| Visiting Domestic Students | Visiting domestic students must have an insurance plan that meets the coverage standards above. |
| Visiting International Students | Visiting international students enrolled in person in Yale Summer Session are enrolled in and charged for CISI coverage, which serves as their primary health insurance, unless otherwise noted. |
Considerations for Students With Pre-Existing Conditions
Due to changes in your environment—including time zone, climate, food, and water—even well-managed conditions can have challenges. Studying in a new place, like any transition, can bring about an onset, return, or increase in symptoms.
We strongly recommend that you talk with your primary care physician at home about specific steps to maintain your healthcare plan.
We also encourage you to speak with us in advance. Disclosing a physical and/or mental health condition will allow us to have a plan to assist you in managing your health. It is especially useful to let us know if you:
- Need specific accommodations (physical or academic)
- Are currently taking prescription medication
- Are being treated for a current mental health or physical condition
- Have severe allergies
Bear in mind that approaches to, and systems of, health care may be different than what you are accustomed to at home. Bring with you any pertinent health documentation such as prescriptions, and eyeglass/contact prescriptions.
Prescription Medication
Make yourself aware of U.S. customs regulations regarding medicines brought into the U.S. from abroad. Any medication you bring into your host country should be kept in its original, well-marked container and be accompanied by a physician's note describing your condition and the necessity of the medication. Discuss with your doctor at home about continuing to take your prescribed medication while participating in Summer Session.
