Billing, Payment, and Refund Information
This page provides important information about your Yale Summer Session bill, including how to view and pay your bill, accepted payment methods, payment deadlines, and refund policies. Here, you will find everything you need to ensure a smooth and timely payment process for your summer at Yale.
Confirming Your Enrollment
On admission to Yale Summer Session, current Yale students are officially enrolled in the courses listed in their acceptance letter; no further confirmation is needed.
Visiting students must reply to the offer of admission and confirm their enrollment by submitting a $500 Enrollment Deposit and a $50 Administrative Fee before the deadline indicated in their Checklist for Admitted Students. The $500 deposit is applied to tuition and will be reflected on the student bill. Instructions on how to pay the deposit and fee by credit card can be found in the Checklist. The Enrollment Deposit and Administrative Fee are non-refundable.
Visiting students who miss this payment deadline will be withdrawn from their courses and should contact yss.registrar@yale.edu if they have any questions about requesting the reactivation of their enrollment.
Viewing and Paying Your Bill
After your Yale Summer Session enrollment is confirmed, an invoice for your expenses is automatically generated, and an electronic billing notification, with instructions on how to log into YalePay to view your account and pay your bill, will be sent to the e-mail address you provided in your online application.
Summer charges do not begin to post until late March, so your summer account balance may appear as $0 until then.
To view your bill, you must have an active Yale NetID and password. Visiting students will receive instructions for activating their NetID within ten days of submitting their non-refundable enrollment deposit and administrative fee.
Your Account Summary will list the charges due for summer courses. Please take careful note of Yale Summer Session’s payment deadlines. If you apply later in the cycle, April to June, your actual payment deadline may be earlier than what is listed on your account statement. In this case, please pay by the earlier Yale Summer Session payment deadline; it is your responsibility to submit payment in full before the relevant deadline.
Financial aid loan checks must be received by Student Financial and Administrative Services by the payment deadlines.
[Point] To view and pay your summer balance online in YalePay:
- Select Student Log In, and sign in with your Yale NetID and password.
- From the menu, select Account Summary.
- Click on Make Payment to select payment type: e-Check or wire transfer.
- Your account will be updated as soon as Yale Financial Services processes your payment. Electronic payments will be updated immediately, wire transfers within three business days.
Nonpayment by the deadline may result in a withdrawal from Yale Summer Session. Students with outstanding financial obligations, whether for Yale Summer Session or for previous terms at Yale University, will not be permitted to register for classes.
Payment Methods
Yale University recommends payment online through YalePay using a United States checking or savings account. There is no charge to use this service, and payments are immediately posted to the student account. The University also accepts payment by check, by a third party, and by international or domestic wire transfer.
Aside from the Application Fee, and the Enrollment Deposit and Administrative Fee for visiting students, Yale Summer Session is unable to accept credit or debit cards as a method of payment for the full balance.
Payment plans are not available in Yale Summer Session.
Payment by Check
Checks should be made payable to Yale University. All payments must be made in United States dollars and drawn on a United States bank.
For accurate processing, the student’s full name and nine-digit Yale student identification (SID) number must appear on the check. Please allow for adequate mailing time to ensure that payment is received by the due date.

Refund Policies
The Application Fee is non-refundable. The I-20 Processing Fee, Enrollment Deposit, and Administrative Fee for visiting students are also non-refundable.
Yale Summer Session will refund course tuition and residential program fee (housing fee) payments according to the terms and schedule listed below. No refunds will be made unless we have received appropriate written notification. For visiting students, any refund will be calculated after deducting the non-refundable deposit.
Students are advised to take special note of these financial policies and deadlines; for consistency and fairness across all Yale Summer Session students, they are strictly enforced.
Course Tuition
A full course tuition refund will be issued if a student notifies Yale Summer Session, prior to the start of the relevant five-week session and via the Change Form on the Yale Summer Session website, of their intention not to attend courses in that session.
- If a student drops a course or withdraws entirely from Yale Summer Session by Friday of the first week of the relevant five-week session, at 5:00pm EDT, 100% of the course tuition will be refunded or credited. For online courses, 100% of the Technology Fee will also be refunded or credited. The Technology Fee is then fully non-refundable after Friday of the first week of the relevant five-week session at 5:00pm EDT.
- If a student drops a course or withdraws entirely from Yale Summer Session by Friday of the second week of the relevant five-week session, at 5:00pm EDT, 50% of the course tuition will be refunded or credited.
- No course tuition will be refunded if a student drops a course or withdraws entirely from Yale Summer Session after Friday of the second week of the relevant five-week session at 5:00pm EDT.
If applicable, YSS Financial Assistance and YSS Scholarships will be reduced proportionally before any refund is issued. For example, if a student enrolls in a one-credit course and receives YSS Financial Assistance covering 50% of tuition, then withdraws at the start of the second week of the relevant five-week session, the student remains responsible for 25% of the full course tuition.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure the accuracy of their course enrollment and to withdraw promptly from any courses they no longer intend to take. Withdrawals must be requested via the Change Form on the Yale Summer Session website. Failure to attend or submit work in a course, and requests via phone or e-mail, do not constitute a withdrawal.
Residential Program Fees
For students who have elected to live in the Yale Summer Session Summer Colleges, a full refund of residential program fees (housing fees) for room and board and residential student activities will be issued if a student relinquishes on-campus housing or withdraws entirely from Yale Summer Session via the Change Form on the Yale Summer Session website prior to the move-in date for the relevant five-week session.
Once students are in residence in the Yale Summer Session Summer Colleges, they are entitled to a partial refund of residential program fees only by relinquishing on-campus housing or withdrawing entirely from Yale Summer Session via the Change Form by Friday of the first week of the relevant five-week session at 5:00pm EDT. In such cases, the student will be charged prorated residential program fees for each day in residence. Before a refund can be authorized, the student’s room must be inspected, and the room keys must be returned to the Summer Housing Office.
No residential program fees for room and board and residential student activities will be refunded to students who relinquish on-campus housing after Friday of the first week of the relevant five-week session at 5:00pm EDT.
Refund Methods
Once authorized and initiated, refunds will be made by direct deposit or, if the student has not enrolled in direct deposit, by paper check mailed to the student’s mailing address on file. Direct deposit refunds are issued daily while paper check refunds are issued once a week, so students are strongly encouraged to enroll in direct deposit. You can enroll in direct deposit for your refund through the Yale Hub. After logging in, select Student Accounts and then Direct Deposit Authorization.
All refunds will be issued in the student's name, unless the refund results from excess funds from a Parent PLUS Loan or the return of an outside scholarship. In such cases, the refund will be made to the original source in accordance with federal regulations and institutional policies.
If an international payment was made via Flywire, the refund will go back to the person or organization that made the payment, once the student initiates the refund request and it is approved.
Students can request a refund by e-mailing yss.registrar@yale.edu.
