Combine Online Learning with In-Person Exploration

Yale Summer Session hybrid courses combine the flexibility of online learning with an immersive week on campus at Yale.

The five-week format begins with four weeks online, including independent project work and one scheduled synchronous class meeting each week. The fifth week is spent full-time on campus in New Haven, where you will put your learning into practice through hands-on work, field trips, and other experiences connected to the course.

The online portion is scheduled in the evenings, making these courses accessible to high school students while they are still in school.

Yale Summer Session cannot issue an I-20 for these hybrid courses. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, or already hold a valid F-1 visa that permits them to enroll in the course.

Hybrid Courses

You can choose one of the following three courses for your hybrid experience.

Minds, Brains, and Machines

Instructor: Julian Jara-Ettinger

Leibniz compared the brain to a mill, Freud to a hydraulic system, and now we think of it as a computer. Have we gotten it right? If so, what kind of computer is the brain? And what kind of software is the mind? This course explores these questions by integrating classical and cutting-edge findings from artificial intelligence, cognitive science, neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology. In this course you learn how modern artificial intelligence works—including deep neural networks, program synthesis, and neuro-symbolic approaches. You learn how to think about artificial intelligence from the perspectives of cognitive science and neuroscience. And you learn how current advances in AI are helping us understand how the mind and brain works. Conversely, you also learn how advances in psychology and neuroscience have played a key role in the biggest ideas in AI. This course is ideal for a variety of students: Psychology and cognitive science majors that want to learn about AI. CS students that want to know how to think about AI from a cognitive perspective. And anyone who wants to know how to think critically about all the advances in the study of minds, brains, and machines.

Leadership Through Public Speaking

Instructor: Elise Morrison

This course is a practicum in leadership through public speaking. We will be practicing the arts of persuasive communication through embodied, relational communication, both in the classroom and in the social-educational contexts in which students are living and working. We will discuss and practice communication skills for a wide range of "publics" -- from scholarly to vocational to interpersonal, aiming to integrate leadership-based communication practices into multiple aspects of students' lives.

Product Design and Innovation

Instructor: Jorge Torres

This course teaches the science and craft of building new products. Working in teams and starting with a real-world problem, students research an industry, interview advisors and customers, generate a wide pool of ideas, select rigorously among them, analyze whether the finalist creates value, test its riskiest assumptions, and produce a working product. The course is hybrid. Four weekly two-hour online sessions establish the method and carry teams through analysis. A residential week in New Haven, which includes a Final Showcase before an audience of industry critics, carries teams through validation and build. The course suits students who want to start a new venture, join a product team, or understand how new things get made.
