Develop Your English Communication Skills. Explore Your Academic Interests. Experience Yale.
Offered during Yale Summer Session B, the English Language Institute (ELI) offers immersive programs for international students who want to strengthen their English while pursuing academic and professional interests. Through classroom instruction, practical experiences, and life on Yale’s campus, students build communication skills and gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. academic and professional environment.
Choose the program that fits your goals: Academic English, with pathways in Business & Leadership or American Culture & Society, or U.S. Law and Legal Communication, which combines an introduction to the U.S. legal system with specialized legal communication skills.

The Yale Experience
ELI students are part of the Yale Summer Session community. Students live in Yale’s residential colleges, participate in lectures, campus events, and social activities, and have opportunities to explore New Haven and the surrounding region through excursions and trips.
Study alongside an international community of learners while experiencing the academic, cultural, and residential life of Yale.
Build Skills for What's Next
ELI programs are designed to help students communicate with greater confidence in English-speaking academic and professional environments. Through classroom learning, collaboration, and immersive experiences, students develop skills and perspectives that can support their future studies and careers.
English Proficiency
You do not need to provide proof of English proficiency when applying to an ELI program. However, students are expected to have strong English language skills sufficient to participate fully in an academically focused, immersive program.
