Your Health, Safety, and Well-being Are Our Top Priorities

We encourage you to review the resources on this page and share them with your family to ensure a safe and successful experience at Yale. While we provide support, it is also important that you take personal responsibility for your health and safety while in New Haven.

Health

[point] All students attending in-person classes must be enrolled in health insurance.

Living On-Campus

All students enrolled in Yale Summer Session and who are living on-campus are entitled to limited services at the Yale Health Center located at 55 Lock St. You may be referred to a hospital or other provider for serious conditions, and based on the type of medical insurance you carry.

Living Off-Campus

If you are living off-campus, you should find a medical provider within your health insurance network.

How is your healthcare covered?

For all students, for any life-threatening emergency, either call 911 for an ambulance or go to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Your Yale Health coverage is unique based on the type of student you are. Remember to carry your health insurance card with you at all times.  It will be asked for in the event that you need medical care.

Student TypeInsurance Coverage
Currently-enrolled Yale College studentsYour academic year Yale Health plan carries over to the summer. If you have just returned from an approved spring semester study abroad program, contact Member Services at Yale Health because your coverage has been turned off until the start of the Fall semester and you will likely have a gap in your Yale Health insurance coverage. If you are a senior attending Session B, your Yale Health coverage will end before Session B ends, so you will have a gap in health insurance coverage. Contact Member Services with questions about possibly extending your coverage.
Incoming Yale First-Year studentsDuring Summer Session, you will be covered by your personal health insurance. You will have limited services available at Yale Health if you are living on-campus. Your Yale Health coverage, as a Yale student, will begin at the start of the Fall semester.
Visiting Domestic studentsYou are covered by your personal health insurance. You will have limited services available at Yale Health if you are living on-campus.
Visiting International studentsYour CISI insurance, which Yale Summer Session has enrolled you in, is your primary health insurance unless otherwise noted. You will have limited services available at Yale Health if you are living on-campus.

Care During Summer Session

[point] This is limited guidance for students living on-campus. If you need additional help navigating your health situation, please contact your residential counselor or the Yale Summer Session office.

What's Wrong?What to Do
Serious injury or life threatening emergency

In an emergency—seek immediate help! Call 911 immediately for emergency medical personnel and an ambulance.

After you've called 911, call the residential life on-call number. We will let your counselor know and assist you as appropriate.

Acute illnesses and injuries that require prompt care but will generally not cause loss of life or severe impairment if left untreated for a brief time.Call the Yale Health Acute Care department and identify yourself as a Yale Summer Session student. The on-call nurse is available 24-hours a day and can provide medical advice based on your situation. Let your counselor know if Acute Care has advised you to go in-person to the Acute Care department. Acute care prefers that you call in advance rather than walking directly there because they see patients on a first come, first served basis during the day, and they treat the most medically severe people first. (You may have a long wait if you don't call in advance). The wait time is listed on their website.
Non-urgent medical appointments, bloodwork, etc.Make an appointment with Student Health at Yale Health. Identify yourself as a Yale Summer Session student. You can choose whether or not to let your counselor know.
You need over the counter items such as ibuprofen, aspirin, allergy relief, cold medicinesThe Yale Health pharmacy sells over-the-counter items. The Pharmacy is located on the first floor, on the left, when you walk in the front door of Yale Health.

Visiting the Yale Health Center

The Yale Health Center is located at 55 Lock Street and can be used by Yale Summer Session students living on campus.

  • You must have an appointment before entering the Yale Health Center, except to visit the Pharmacy or Acute Care (see the note above about Acute Care).
  • Patients are allowed one support person for regular office appointments.
  • They have a table with masks right at the entrance if you need one. If you are sick, they request that you put a mask on.
  • If you are sick, please call Acute Care or Student Health so they can direct you to the best place to receive care.  Identify yourself as a Yale Summer Session student.

Considerations for Students with Pre-existing Conditions

Due to changes in your environment—including time zone, climate, food, and water—even well-managed conditions can have challenges. Studying in a new place, like any transition, can bring about an onset, return, or increase in symptoms.

We strongly recommend that you talk with your primary care physician at home about specific steps to maintain your healthcare plan.

We also encourage you to speak with us in advance. Disclosing a physical and/or mental health condition will allow us to have a plan to assist you in managing your health. It is especially useful to let us know if you:

  • Need specific accommodations (physical or academic)
  • Are currently taking prescription medication
  • Are being treated for a current mental health or physical condition
  • Have severe allergies

Bear in mind that approaches to, and systems of, health care may be different than what you are accustomed to at home. Bring with you any pertinent health documentation such as prescriptions, and eyeglass/contact prescriptions.

Prescription Medication

Make yourself aware of U.S. customs regulations regarding medicines brought into the U.S. from abroad. Any medication you bring into your host country should be kept in its original, well-marked container and be accompanied by a physician's note describing your condition and the necessity of the medication. Discuss with your doctor at home about continuing to take your prescribed medication while participating in Summer Session.
