Continue Your Studies This Summer
Take Yale College courses for credit, explore new academic interests, or get ahead on your degree requirements through Yale Summer Session.
Before applying, keep the following in mind:
- Select your courses thoughtfully. You’ll indicate your course choices in the online application. Review course descriptions and prerequisites carefully before applying.
- Course changes are limited. Yale Summer Session does not have an Add/Drop period, and opportunities to change courses are limited.
- Admission means enrollment. Admission to a course constitutes enrollment. If you decide not to attend, you must withdraw by submitting the Change Form by the applicable deadline. Students who do not withdraw by the applicable deadline will receive a grade.
- Credit limit: Students may enroll in a maximum of two credits per session.
- Credit/D/Fail: See the YSS Student Handbook for information about Credit/D/Fail policies.
Please note that Dean’s excuses are not available during the summer term. If you need guidance on whether a course fulfills requirements for your Yale College degree, consult your residential college dean, DUS, or another academic adviser.
Application Requirements
The following materials are required for Yale College student applications:
- An online application
- Yale College transcript
- A non-refundable $80 application fee*

*Returning Yale Summer Session students pay the application fee only once; the fee is waived for future applications.
For In-Person Study: Insurance
Your health insurance coverage during Summer Session depends on your Yale College student status. Review the information below to understand whether your Yale Health coverage will continue during the summer.
Rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors
If you are a current Yale College student who will return to Yale in the fall as a sophomore, junior, or senior, your Yale Health coverage will continue during Summer Session as it does during the academic year.
Students Returning from Spring Study Abroad
If you are returning from an approved spring semester study abroad program, your Yale Health coverage will have been discontinued during your time abroad and will not resume until the beginning of the fall semester. This means you may have a gap in coverage during Summer Session.
Yale College Seniors Attending Session B
If you graduated from Yale College in the spring and are attending Summer Session B, your Yale Health coverage will have ended when you graduated. You will therefore have a gap in Yale Health coverage during Session B.

Yale Summer Session Financial Assistance
Yale Summer Session offers limited financial assistance to Yale College students on financial aid. In addition, Yale College students may also be eligible for other types of aid. See Financial Assistance for more information.
Residential Information for Yale College Students
In your application, you may elect to live on campus over the summer. Yale Summer Session is assigned to a select set of Residential Colleges, and you may be assigned to a different college than the one you belong to during the academic year. If this is the case, you will not have access to your regular college. Yale undergraduates serve as residential counselors, offering support and assistance. Interested in Working for Yale Summer Session?
- Be a Summer Session Residential Counselor: Yale College students may apply to be a member of the Summer Colleges staff. As a Summer Counselor, you would receive free room and board for the orientation period and the ten weeks of summer session, plus a tuition waiver for the equivalent of one summer course credit. You'll need to be able to commit to the ten weeks of YSS plus the orientation days before YSS begins.
- Summer Colleges staff positions: Various positions with varying levels of compensation are also available.
