Yale Summer Online courses make it possible for you to continue your studies in the summer when you are away from campus. This unique learning experience is built around live online seminars and lecture courses with discussion sessions. Our online classroom allows you and your classmates to come together live each week to discuss course topics. Combining cutting-edge technology with a blend of synchronous and asynchronous activity, our courses enable rich conversation and thoughtful feedback, while providing close, personal engagement with faculty.

Course Information

Here’s an overview of important details about the structure and requirements of Yale Summer Session online courses.

  • Each course is worth one (1) Yale College credit, the equivalent of four (4) credit hours.
  • Each course meets for five weeks, with specific start and end dates in either Summer Session A or Summer Session B.
  • Online work is not exclusively self-study or self-paced, you will need to be available to meet live online for classes during the course of the 5-week session. See the course list for class schedules.
  • Yale Summer Session courses are compressed to five weeks and taught at an accelerated pace resulting in a heavier weekly workload.  It is important to consider this when planning summer activities and applying for courses; students should expect to devote about 15-20 total hours per week, per course.
    • There are no make-up or rescheduled exams for online courses, please verify that there are no conflicts with your course schedule.
  • Course formats are either seminar or lecture.
    • Seminars are a hybrid format with pre-recorded lectures and live synchronous class meetings.
    • Lecture courses feature fully synchronous class meetings.

Technical In​formation

To ensure a smooth and engaging learning experience, here are the technology requirements for participating in Yale Summer Online courses.

  • Yale Summer Online utilizes the Canvas learning management system to deliver the course material. Learn more about Canvas system requirements
  • All courses include online discussion sections over the Zoom video conferencing system. Learn more about Zoom's system requirements
  • You need to have a way to transmit video. Cameras built into computer monitors are sufficient. For students who do not have a built-in camera on their computer, one can be purchased inexpensively. Here is an example web cam.
  • When possible, we urge you to have a wired Internet connection for the live discussion sections. 

[point] Yale Summer Online courses feature weekly live video-based group meetings with faculty. It is essential that each participant has the requisite Internet speed of at least 2 Mb/s up and down. Check your speed from your summer course location.

Please review these requirements carefully to make sure your setup is ready for live discussions, video participation, and seamless course access.

Important Information for Current Yale College Students Participating in Yale Summer Session Online Courses

Yale Summer Session offers financial assistance for tuition to Yale College students who receive financial aid during the regular academic year. Financial assistance covers 50% of the tuition of one course, and you may receive financial assistance for a maximum of two credits each summer. Yale College students on financial aid during the academic year will automatically receive this assistance by answering the relevant question on the application. No separate application is required.

Yale Summer Session courses taught exclusively online are offered in the summer as a way for students to take Yale College courses for credit without being in a physical classroom. Much of the learning is synchronous and the course work is equivalent to summer session courses taught in person, in New Haven. Online courses are designated by the letter “E” following the course number, e.g. ECON S115E. These courses may be used to fulfill distributional requirements and in some cases even requirements for the major if approved by the department.

[point] Students enrolled in Summer Programs Abroad (Yale and Non-Yale programs) are not permitted to take online courses concurrently.

Payment: For-Credit Courses

  • The application fee of $80 is paid online with a credit card.
  • The tuition cost of $5,270 and technology fee of $85 must be paid no later than the last working day before the start of the course. Nonpayment will result in immediate disenrollment.
  • Payment must be made to Yale University by check or wire transfer. Learn more about payment details.

Application Process: For-Credit Courses

  • The application deadline for Session A online courses is May 2, 2025 for visiting students and May 9, 2025 for Yale College students.  The Session B online course application deadline is June 6, 2025 for visiting students and June 13, 2025 for Yale College students..
  • Please read the application requirements prior to starting the application.
  • Fill out the online application. Choose the online course denoted by the letter “E” at the end of the number. Make a careful note of the correct five digit CRN (course registration number) that appears in parentheses following the course number.
  • Accepted students will be notified immediately via email once they have been admitted to the course.
  • The course change deadlines for online courses are: Session A is May 16; Session B, June 20.
